Landscape with Flock and Shepherds

Artist:  Achille Dovera (1838-1895)

Artwork title:  Paesaggio con gregge e pastori

Age:  19th Century / 1801 - 1900

Subject:  Landscape with Figures

Artistic technique:  Painting

Technical specification:  Oil on Canvas

Description : Paesaggio con gregge e pastori

Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. This is likely Achille Dovera's largest work, presumably intended for an important patron. A small preparatory sketch on wood depicting the same scene has been sold on the market. In the center of the foreground, the work features a large flock of sheep walking along a path, accompanied by several shepherds. The animals emerge, enveloped in a great cloud of dust, from a passage through lush vegetation, in a flat countryside against the backdrop of mountain peaks. The Milanese painter Achille Dovera is considered a leading exponent of 19th-century naturalist and genre painting. A landscape painter, Dovera formally maintains a connection with phenomenal reality, which he reproduces with precision, even though color and light play a fundamental role; his rapid, moving brushstrokes lend freshness and immediacy to the scene without disrupting the forms. This large painting is presented in a beautiful, contemporary gilded wooden frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Achille Dovera (1838-1895)

Achille Dovera, born in Milan in 1838, studied at the Brera Academy, focusing on landscape and figures with Francesco Hayez. From him, he developed a Romantic style of painting, in the manner of Gaetano Fasanotti (1832-1882), whom he closely resembles in his meticulous analysis of details, captured with precision and naturalism. Dovera, however, also bears resemblance, especially in his marine paintings, to the more famous Neapolitan painter Eduardo Dalbono, whom he undoubtedly encountered during his varied visits to exhibitions. He undertook several study trips to France and exhibited in Milan, Turin, and Venice. In 1860, he participated in Garibaldi's Expedition of the Thousand to the South, a theme reflected in the paintings exhibited at Brera the following year (including General Garibaldi's Review on the Foot of Mount Pellegrino in Palermo). At exhibitions, he presented views and seascapes of Normandy and Liguria, the Paris area, the Lombardy lakes, Brianza, the Ticino valleys, and finally, after 1890, the Argentine coasts and Morocco. Achille Dovera maintained ties to the Romantic tradition, particularly evident in his accentuated atmospheric notations. Dovera died in Milan in 1895, but was present posthumously at the famous Milanese exhibition "Lombard Painting in the 19th Century," curated by Vespasiano Bignami in 1900, a testament to the success he enjoyed in his century.

Technical specification: Oil on Canvas
