Additional Information

Artist: Ottone Rosai (1895-1957)

Born in Florence in 1985, Rosai Ottone enrolled at the Institute of Decorative Arts in Piazza Santa Croce, where he studied decorative drawing. Rosai continued his artistic training as a self-taught artist and in 1913 joined the Futurist Movement, becoming interested in the works of Boccioni and befriending some of the group's leading figures, such as Soffici, Carrà, and Severini. He also began collaborating with the magazine "Lacerba," and after the war, he developed his own pictorial language, drawing inspiration from Cubist and Metaphysical experiences. The artist's favorite subjects were still lifes, landscapes, compositions with figures, and views of Florence's working-class neighborhoods. In 1933, he signed the "Realist Manifesto," which extolled Fascist culture and art, but the artist always painted anti-rhetorical portraits, characterized by the humanity of the "defeated." In 1939, he became a professor of figure drawing at the Art School and held the chair of painting at the Academy of Florence. He died suddenly in Ivrea in 1957, while organizing a solo exhibition.
