Inlay made of various woods. The inlay depicts the figure of a cellist in eighteenth-century dress. Francesco Ferrario was an accomplished cabinetmaker, influenced by the Neoclassical and Art Nouveau movements. Having trained in drawing at the Brera Academy, after collaborating with the finest artists of the time, he opened a workshop in Milan, first on Via Tenca, and then in 1927 on Corso Sempione. A label on the back of the work places it among the works produced at this latter location. The work is presented in a period frame.

Additional Information
Artist: Francesco Ferrario (1875-1946)
Born in Caravaggio (BG) in 1875, Francesco Ferrari moved to Milan with his family at a young age and entered the workshop of the Scotti brothers, cabinetmakers, carvers, and wood sculptors. He attended the Scuola Superiore di Arte Applicata all'Industria at Castello Sforzesco, and then continued his studies at the Brera Academy, earning a diploma as a drawing teacher. A student of Giuseppe Mentessi and architect Gaetano Moretti, he befriended the master Ludovico Pogliaghi and other artists, including Carlo Rizzarda Feltre. In 1901, he opened his own workshop on Via Carlo Tenca in Milan, and in 1927, he moved to Via Sempione, where his workshop employed about thirty workers. His children also contributed to the business: his son Pietro and, to a lesser extent, his son Adriano, continued their father's work. In 1938, Ferrario played a leading role in organizing the Giuseppe Maggiolini memorial exhibition. From 1919 to 1925, Francesco Ferrario regularly participated in the International Exhibitions of Decorative Arts, affirming his refined style. In 1943, the workshop and shop were destroyed by bombing during World War II, and the company moved to Via Vittoria Colonna. Francesco Ferrario died in 1946.Age: 20th Century / 1901 - 2000
