Kartell is an Italian company founded in 1949 in Noviglio, in the province of Milan, that produces furniture and sophisticated industrial design objects made of plastic. The company was founded by Giulio Castelli, a chemical engineer who began his business producing car accessories and plastic household goods. The brand's success consolidated in the 1960s, a particularly positive period for Italian design. International recognition came in 1972 with its participation in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York dedicated to Italian-made furniture. The pieces presented there, designed by Gae Aulenti, Ettore Sottsass, and Marco Zanuso, are still part of the museum's permanent collection. In the 1990s, it began a long-lasting collaboration with several internationally renowned designers, including Antonio Citterio, Ron Arad, Vico Magistretti, Philippe Starck, Piero Lissoni, and many others. In 1999, Kartell founded the eponymous museum, which collects and exhibits more than 1,000 creations. Several Kartell products have received international awards, including the Compasso d'Oro, the prize awarded annually by the ADI (Association for Industrial Design), considered the most important award in the world in the sector. Kartell's distinctive feature is its use of plastic in furniture in a completely original way, employing manufacturing technologies traditionally used in other industrial sectors. Kartell products are entirely produced in Italy, although their largest sales market is the United States. Among the most famous and successful products are the Maui seating series by Magistretti, the transparent two-piece La Marie chair, the Eros armchairs, the rotationally molded "Ghost" and Bubble chair series by Starck, and the Bookworm bookcase by Ron Arad.Time: 2000s
