Additional Information
Artist: Marcus C. Stone (1840-1921)
Born in London in 1840, Marcus C. Stone studied at the Royal Academy, where he began exhibiting at the age of eighteen. A few years later, he illustrated, with great success, books by Charles Dickens, Anthony Trollope, and other writers who were friends of his family. Stone was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Academy in 1877 and an Academician in 1887. His early paintings focused heavily on historical episodes, but in his later works he devoted himself primarily to a particular type of genre scene, characterized by delicate sentiment and treated with great charm, refinement, and skill. One of his canvases is in the Tate. Most of his works were engraved, and he was awarded medals at exhibitions around the world.Age: 19th Century / 1801 - 1900
