Description
Famous weekly magazine of the Risorgimento period linked to current political and cultural events in Italy, directed by Giuseppe Massari, with an editorial line that aimed at the cautious diffusion of the unitary sentiments that were beginning to circulate in the peninsula. The publisher Giuseppe Pomba aimed at a very high circulation of the magazine and the undertaking proved to be rather costly, also due to the numerous woodcuts that enriched it. After the publication of 104 issues, Pomba was no longer able to sustain the expenses: in 1848 the enterprise had to close with a heavy deficit. In the preface of the Editors to this collection of the year 1848, the historical reasons for this closure are set out: “When we, at the beginning of the year 1847, courageously took on this publication, communications between the various States of Italy were free, but there was a bothersome censorship in them... the number of members could hardly correspond to the huge expense suffered... We then decided to desist. But the advice, the encouragement and the comfort of many... induced us to continue it throughout 1848, a year of upheavals, changes and wars; a year that began with the brightest hopes of civil happiness and military glory, and ended amidst the darkest clouds... We can only take affectionate leave of our readers.” In the years 1860-61, his nephew Luigi Pomba attempted to continue with the publication, but it all ended in failure and in 1863 L'Illustrazione Italiana was born. Among the contributors to the periodical we remember G. Strafforello, C. Balbo, C. Cantù, G. Massari, G. Dina, D. Carutti, R. Bonghi, C. Matteucci.
