Description
Project submitted by architect Mario Palanti for the competition for the construction of the Palazzo del Littorio in Rome, as part of the redevelopment of the Imperial Forum area. The project was one of 14 selected for the second round of the competition, but was subsequently rejected. Palanti nevertheless had this "numbered, out-of-print, highly confidential edition" published by Rizzoli in 1934: our copy bears number 512. The project, in perfect rationalist style in keeping with the spirit of the regime, as detailed in the presentation to the examining committee, envisioned an enormous building in the shape of a Roman trireme, adorned with statues and high reliefs. Forty-four plates present plans, representations of the building from various angles, and details of the ornamentation and interiors.
