The work presented here features a "Minstrel" a Nigerian figure of singer, musician, and itinerant actor, who was part of the oral and social tradition, creating art based on social events and serving as a social critic. Additional Information

Artist: Bruce Obomeyoma Onobrakpeya (1932)

Born in 1932 in Agbara-Otor, Delta State, the son of an Urhobo woodcarver, Bruce Obomeyoma Onobrakpeya was raised Christian but also learned traditional religious beliefs. His family moved to Benin City when he was still young. He attended Western Boys High School in Benin City, where his art teacher was Edward Ivehivboje. He also took drawing classes at the British Council Art Club in Benin City. One of the artists who inspired him was Emmanuel Erabor and his watercolors. After graduating, Onobrakpeya was hired as an art teacher at Western Boys High School in Benin City (1953–1956). In 1956, he moved to Ondo, where he taught for a year at Ondo Boys High School. In October 1957, Onobrakpeya was admitted to the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, now Ahmadu Bello University, in Zaria. He was able to pay for his studies thanks to a Federal Government Scholarship. At the same time, he began experimenting with an artistic practice based on Nigerian folklore, its myths, and legends. Most of his work is based on the use of stylistic elements and compositions derived from decorative arts and traditional African sculpture. On October 9, 1958, a group of college students led by Uche Okeke founded the Zaria Arts Society, later known as Zaria Rebels, with the aim of "decolonizing" the visual arts taught by European expatriates. Onobrakpeya later stated that college helped him grow technically, but it was the Zaria Arts Society, a group where they discussed art, that shaped his professional artistry. This group gave him the courage to seek his own form of expression. He began to elongate figures, ignore perspective, and evoke the supernatural through ambiguous decorative elements. Onobrakpeya subsequently attended several printmaking workshops in Ibadan, Oshogbo, Ife, and the Haystack Mountains School of Crafts, Maine, USA. The first exhibition dedicated entirely to his work was held in 1959 in Ughelli, in the Niger Delta. This was followed by other exhibitions in the USA, Italy, Zimbabwe, Germany, Britain, Kenya, and many other countries. Onobrakpeya has contributed significantly to the revival of contemporary Nigerian art. He taught for many years at St. Gregory's College, Lagos.
