Acrylic on canvas. Signature and title on the back. In the artistic production of Arturo Vermi, who, together with his friends at Cenobio, dedicates himself to the research and analysis of the Sign as an expressive trait, his search for "a calm, a silence [...]" dates back to the post-1985 years, as he himself said: "simple values, in their wild state, essential and pure, and so I found the blank page, the space, but not to fill it, but rather to strip it and leave a silver horizontal sign in the middle of a blue, or two signs in the middle of the entire empty painting, and so I called that series "Landscapes."

Additional Information
Artist: Arturo Vermi (1928-1988)
Born in Bergamo in 1928, Arturo Vermi devoted himself to painting from the early 1950s, drawing on a self-taught education and a taste for expressionist and Nordic influences. In the mid-1950s, he moved toward the Informal movement, then rapidly gaining international traction, thanks to his association with the Milanese art scene, particularly Brera. His first solo exhibition took place in 1956 at the Pirelli recreational club, a lively exhibition space for contemporary avant-garde trends. However, it was during the two years he spent in Paris from 1960 that the artist truly matured, thanks in part to his association with some of the leading French ateliers, including those of André Blok, Szabo, and Ossip Zadkine. Returning to Milan in 1961, Vermi formed the Gruppo del Cenobio with Sordini and Verga, later joined by Agostino Ferrari, Alberto Lucia, and Ugo La Pietra. The first "Diaries" emerged in the two-year period of 1961-62, in which the graphic experiences gained in Paris led the artist to "carve traces into the square, signs, and writings," whereby "the sign is an interpreter of space, also proposed as a conceptual image": signs that repeat in reiterated and ordered sequences, marking the rectangular surface of the pictorial page. In 1964, Vermi resided in the Quartiere delle Botteghe in Sesto San Giovanni. In 1965, his association with Lucio Fontana led him to explore the concept of space, which he quickly developed in his work: "In 1965," Vermi himself recalled, "I began a work that I would define as space. By space, now, I mean the void, the space outside the earth, cosmic space." It was the beginning of a successful period, culminating in the critical acclaim he received at exhibitions at the Galleria Blu in Milan, the Rotonda della Besana, and the Piombi in Venice, all in 1974. The following year, 1975, was a milestone in the artist's life and work: it marked the beginning of that proposal of happiness that would lead Vermi to edit the first issue of "Azzurro" (1975) and the "Manifesto del Disimpegno" (1978). Having moved to Verderio, in Brianza, that same year the Ministry of Education commissioned a documentary on his work to be used as a teaching aid for high schools. In 1978, he revisited and expanded the themes and concepts expressed in the "Manifesto del Disimpegno," and a second issue of "Azzurro" was distributed during the Venice Biennale. Finally, that same year, he began the work of ornamentation and reuse that would later flow into the cycle of large canvases "Com'era bella la Terra." Then, in 1980, he designed and engraved "La Sequoia," a sort of table of laws that the following year, during a trip to Egypt with Antonio Paradiso and Nanda Vigo, he would return to Moses on Mount Sinai. Also in 1980, his work focused on the suite "I Colloqui," which presaged the creation of his final work: "L'Annologio," a time measurer "more human, more in tune with our times," as the artist defined it. a clock that completes a yearly rotation like the earth around the sun, and that does not divide human life into fractions, with the resulting obligations, duties, and impositions. In May 1983, Vermi wrote that he wanted to do "only beautiful things" and no longer "analyze the errors and horrors of men or pass on their memory."Age: Contemporary

Technical specification: Acrylic Paint
