Description : Scena di vendemmia
Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower right. The Brescian artist Eliodoro Coccoli "was not by vocation an easel painter," but rather established himself primarily as an interior and exterior decorator, creating secular frescoes for various Lombard villas and sacred subjects for numerous churches. His canvases are very few, and mostly date from before 1922, the year in which his decorative production greatly expanded, but numerous sketches and several preparatory canvases for frescoes remain. This grape harvest scene may also be part of this type of production, although it is defined and detailed in its details. Coccoli's style cannot be traced to any particular movement; indeed, he is considered an expert in eclecticism: he selects the figurative repertoire best suited to the client's needs, adapting his style to the subject and the architectural characteristics of the location. Furthermore, it demonstrates a refined, at times virtuosic, technical expertise. The work is presented in a frame.

Additional Information
Artist: Eliodoro Coccoli (1880-1974)
Born in Brescia in 1880, Coccoli demonstrated a strong inclination for painting from early childhood. He attended the "Moretto" School of Art, where, after graduating, he became a teacher. From 1925 to 1955, he taught figure painting at the "Beato Angelico" School in Milan, whose rector at the time was the architect Monsignor Polvara. At a very young age, he became involved in national and international artistic life, participating in numerous competitions and winning numerous prizes and accolades. In the first half of the 20th century, Coccoli frescoed villas and palaces in the province of Brescia and many churches in Lombardy, Piedmont, Liguria, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and Trentino-Alto Adige. Outside Italy, he worked in Switzerland and Malta: his impressive interior decoration of the Collegiate Church of St. Paul in Rabat. Throughout his long career, he also worked in advertising graphics: postcards, signs, and posters for various exhibitions, art calendars, theater events, and the Brescia opera season. He also illustrated the historical novel Tebaldo Brusato by Francesco Bettoni, published in installments by the weekly magazine Brixia between 1914 and 1915. "Coccoli was not by vocation an easel painter," which is why he produced very few canvases, all before 1922, and almost none of which have survived. He did, however, leave behind a substantial series of sketches, studies, and preparatory drawings for frescoes, which showcase Eliodoro's graphic talent: they are mostly charcoal drawings on tracing paper, some large, often squared, which his daughter Anna Coccoli, also a painter, preserved and saved from oblivion. In 2007, he donated them to the "Arte e Spiritualità" museum in Brescia. Coccoli died in Brescia in 1974.Age: 20th Century / 1901 - 2000

Technical specification: Oil on Canvas
