Additional Information

Artist: Eugenio Gignous (1850-1906)

Eugenio Gignous, born in Milan on August 4, 1850, was forced to work in his uncle's business at a young age due to his family's financial situation. Against his parents' wishes, Gignous decided to pursue his artistic calling, enrolling in the decoration course at the Brera Academy in 1864 and winning a silver medal. Dissatisfied with the curriculum, the following year he transferred to Luigi Riccardi's School of Landscape, where he remained until 1870, winning several awards (including the Gold Medal for Progress of the School of Landscape in 1866). The master's influence was crucial to Gignous's vivid rendering of the sky. Immediately after completing his studies in Milan, Gignous began exhibiting in Florence and came into contact with a group of ruffled painters, befriending the older Tranquillo Cremona and Daniele Ranzoni. He was stylistically influenced by this group of artists, moving toward a scattershot style of painting. Gignous exhibited several times in major national exhibitions between 1870 and 1875. In the late 1870s, after several travels (Monviso, Lake Como, Varese, Savona, and Switzerland are just a few of the places where Gignous is immortalized) and a stay in Rome, he came into contact with Filippo Carcano, with whom he presumably traveled to France in 1878, first to the Paris Exposition and then to Lyon. The following year, Carcano, already a frequent visitor to these areas, took Gignous to the shores of Lake Maggiore, which would become his favorite subject. After his marriage in 1881, which bore him seven children, Gignous devoted himself primarily to his family, partially abandoning the artistic world; however, he remained in the circle of Brera artists: from 1880 to 1894, he was an honorary member of the Academy and its committee. During the same period, he continued to submit paintings to various art competitions; in 1891, King Umberto purchased two of his works (March and Study from Life), which were exhibited at the First Milan Triennale. In 1887, he moved permanently to Stresa on his beloved Lake Maggiore, and his artistic production focused on lake views, creating successive works of the same views in different seasons and weather conditions, seeking a faithful representation of their changing visual characteristics, reminiscent of the work of Claude Monet. The cold Stresa winter, however, forced Gignous and his family to spend the season in Liguria, while the summer heat drove them to seek refuge in the mountains, thus expanding the subject matter of the artist's landscape views. Eugenio Gignous died in 1906.

Technical specification: Oil on Canvas

The oil painting is a painting technique using powder pigments mixed with bases in inert and oils.
