Mixed media on paper. Signed lower right. Gustav Klucis, a Russian artist and photographer, was one of the major pioneers of the 20th-century Constructivist avant-garde, an artistic and architectural movement born in Russia in 1913, which developed in parallel with the 1917 Revolution. Its aim was to create art with a useful and practical social function, abandoning the idea of art as an end in itself. The Constructivists used an abstract geometric language to design objects, buildings, and posters that promoted the ideals of the revolution and contributed to the construction of a socialist society. Framed artwork.

Additional Information

Artist: Gustav Klucis (1895-1938)

Born in Rujiena (then part of the Russian Empire, later Latvia), Gustav Klucis began his artistic training in Riga in 1913, later continuing his studies with the Imperial Society for the Promotion of the Arts in St. Petersburg. In 1915, he enlisted in the Russian army, serving in a Latvian rifle detachment, and moved to Moscow in 1917. Over the next three years, he studied art with professors Kazimir Malevich and Anton Pevsner, joined the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, and met and married Valentina Kulagina (1902–1987). He also graduated from the Vkhutemas state art school, where he worked as a color theory teacher from 1924 until the school's closure in 1930. Klucis is one of four artists credited with inventing political photomontage in 1918, along with German Dadaists Hannah Höch and Raoul Hausmann and Russian El Lissitzky. He produced, wrote, and taught political art for the Soviet state for the rest of his life. As the political environment deteriorated in the 1920s and 1930s, Klucis and Kulagina came under increasing pressure to limit their creativity. From 1935, their art was dedicated to Stalin's personality cult. Despite his active and loyal service to the party, he was arrested in early 1938 and soon executed by firing squad (though other sources say he was killed on March 16, 1944, in one of the Central Asian camps), while he was about to leave for New York in 1939. He was sentenced to death by an NKVD commission on February 11 and executed on February 26, 1938; he was accused of participating in a "counterrevolutionary nationalist terrorist organization" and executed along with other Latvian intellectuals and artists. On August 25, 1956, he was rehabilitated. Thanks to Kulagina's donation in 1964, the National Museum of Fine Arts in Riga houses one of the world's largest collections of her husband's works. Klucis is considered one of the major pioneers of the 20th-century Constructivist avant-garde.
