Description : Cristo lavoratore
Oil on canvas. Signed lower right F. Venzo SJ (Societas Jesu, the motto of the Jesuits). This is a work by the Jesuit friar Mario Venzo, a Venetian painter who, after painting during his bohemian youth in Paris, devoted himself to monastic life in 1940, while continuing to paint. This work depicts a young worker in the foreground, inside a modern artisan's workshop, his head surrounded by light: this is likely a modern projection of the young Jesus at work in his father's workshop. The style of the work harks back to Venzo's pictorial period before 1953, the year after which his work became more vibrant with bright, vivid colors and a more stylized figure, while still often focusing on sacred subjects. The work is presented in a frame.

Additional Information
Artist: Mario Venzo (Fratel Venzo) (1900-1989)
Mario Venzo was born in Rossano Veneto in 1900. In 1925, he moved to Paris to experience the artistic ferment of the French capital and achieved some success with difficulty. In 1942, he was admitted as a coadjutor brother to the Jesuits of Lonigo, where he laid down his paintbrushes and was called Brother Venzo. These were years of meditation, silence, and painful renunciation. Following an existential crisis, he was allowed to resume painting. In 1961, he moved to Gallarate, where he found the ideal environment for his pictorial inspiration and prayer. Years of intense artistic production followed—including in southern Italy and Colombia—with flattering critical acclaim and numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad. He died in Gallarate in 1989. His works include religious subjects, portraits, still lifes, floral compositions, and many landscapes, almost always depicted with an extraordinarily intense and joyfully intense color palette with an expressionist tone. It was after his trip to Brazil in 1953 that Venzo moved to bright colors and bold color combinations, which earned him a place among the greatest Italian colorists active during the second half of the twentieth century.Age: 20th Century / 1901 - 2000

Technical specification: Oil on Canvas
