Additional Information
Artist: Maurizio Ligas (1951-2005)
Born in Treviso in 1951, Maurizio Ligas grew up in Bologna in the experimental and self-destructive climate of the 1970s. Despite the protests, drugs, and conformism of the art schools of the time, he looked to Morandi and De Chirico to express his love for "anti-modern" painted images. He later frequented the "Tartaruga" circle of Plinio De Martiis in Rome, who in the early 1980s was attempting a sort of "new return to order." It was a brief period against the grain that left a significant mark on Italian art. Terraces and colonnades jutting out over the sea, steamships wandering between houses, still lifes, and labyrinthine gardens populated Ligas's visions, suspended as if in a trembling soap bubble. Maurizio, however, didn't have the success he expected, and abruptly decided to change his life: he put his poetry away and began a life as a wandering craftsman, frescoing the interiors of stately homes for years. Every now and then, a brilliant painting of his offered hope that he might resume his career as a painter. In 2005, Ligas had just sketched a view of Bologna with the characteristic luminosity of Morandi's memory when he died in a car accident.Age: Contemporary

Technical specification: Oil on Canvas
