Baroque Style

With Baroque style we mean all the production of furniture made in Italy in the time period between the late Baroque and the Rococo era. It is characterized by the formal and decorative layout still rigidly in adherence to the canons dear to the Baroque period . Precisely for this reason it was called Barocchetto . However, it differs from this in adopting smaller volumes and more elegant decorative modules in line with the new times.

Italian Baroque

In this century, the Italian aristocracy experienced an irrepressible political and economic decline. For this reason the tendency to assimilate formal and volumetric novelties finds a natural explanation in this social class. In the previous century there was a great profusion of complete furnishings intended to decorate recently built homes, to proudly show the power of the commissioning family. In the eighteenth century, on the other hand, the aim was only to update the building with only the furniture strictly necessary for the new needs imposed by fashion or functional needs. The Baroque style furniture is decorated in an elegant way, often directly inspired by French fashion, but always executed with rigorous principles of ornamental symmetry.

Baroque style decorations

The techniques mostly used to decorate furniture in the Baroque style are: lacquering, veneering, gilding and silvering and, finally, carving. The representations often represent scenes of bucolic or city life, flora, fauna and references to the Orient. These were produced against light backgrounds. In Italy the maximum expression of this style can be found in Venetian furniture . In these we see the refinement of the curved line which is combined with characteristic lacquered decorations.
