Nel dispiegarsi del lavoro, accanto a un'attenta analisi sociologica del fenomeno "lusso", l'autrice ha esaminato i mutevoli scenari in cui esso si è manifestato nel secolo da poco trascorso, ma ha fatto soprattutto riferimento a quegli oggetti che più comunemente condividono i nostri spazi e a quelli che ornano la nostra persona: riferendosi, in particolare, a quegli oggetti materici o virtuali (come ad esempio il profumo) in grado di tradurre il linguaggio globale, che viene offerto loro dal mondo del consumo e dell'industria in un linguaggio specifico, capace di far emergere le diverse individualità. In un certo senso, la persona può così riappropriarsi del proprio essere contro la tendenza al non essere, tipica della attuale società globalizzante.

The Shoowa people, a small tribe from the kingdom of Kuba, now Zaire, have been designing and making embroidered textiles for hundreds of years. With their complex geometrical patterning and bold colours, these works of art were used in a variety of ways by the Shoowas, as status symbols, dowries, shrouds, religious vestments or as a type of currency. Genuine production ceased around 1905, with the result that they have become collectors' items.
